Year 1 Maths Worksheets
125 free printable worksheets across 10 topics for ages 5-6 (KS1)
Last updated: January 2025
Welcome to our free Year 1 maths worksheets, carefully designed to support children aged 5-6 as they begin their Key Stage 1 maths journey. Every worksheet on My Daily Maths is aligned to the UK national curriculum and structured around three core sections: fluency practice, word problems, and reasoning challenges. This three-part approach ensures that pupils build strong number sense while also developing their ability to apply mathematical thinking to real-world contexts.
Our Year 1 collection covers all the essential topics that children encounter in their first full year of primary school mathematics. From addition and subtraction within 10 and 20, to early measurement skills, telling the time, and recognising coins, each worksheet provides a focused daily practice opportunity. The worksheets are designed to take approximately 10-15 minutes per day, making them ideal for morning starters, homework tasks, or additional practice at home.
Each topic is broken down into weekly subtopics that progressively build skills. For example, our Addition & Subtraction topic starts with simple addition to 10 before moving on to subtraction, then extending to numbers within 20. This careful sequencing allows children to consolidate their understanding at each stage before moving forward.
The worksheets include visual representations, number lines, and concrete examples to support children who are still developing their abstract mathematical thinking. We believe that every child deserves access to high-quality maths resources, which is why all our worksheets are completely free to download and print.
Our Year 1 worksheets fully support the mastery approach to mathematics teaching recommended by the Department for Education and championed by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). The mastery model emphasises deep understanding of each concept before moving on, rather than rushing through topics at surface level. Each worksheet is structured so that children practise a focused skill through varied question types, ensuring they develop both procedural fluency and conceptual understanding. This approach helps every child build the secure foundations they need for future success in mathematics.
Research consistently shows that short, regular practice sessions are far more effective for young learners than longer, infrequent study periods. Studies in cognitive science confirm that 10 to 15 minutes of daily maths practice leads to significantly better retention and understanding compared to a single extended session each week. For Year 1 children, whose concentration spans are still developing, this little-and-often approach is especially important. Daily practice also helps to build positive habits around mathematics, reducing anxiety and fostering confidence from an early age.
Parents play a vital role in supporting their child's mathematical development, and our worksheets make it straightforward to build maths practice into your daily routine at home. Many families find that completing a worksheet as part of the morning routine before school helps children start the day with a sense of achievement. Alternatively, a short session after school or during the weekend can reinforce what has been taught in the classroom that week. You do not need to be a maths expert to help — simply sit with your child, encourage them to explain their thinking, and celebrate their effort. All of our Year 1 maths worksheets are completely free to download and print, with no registration or account required, so you can get started straight away. Simply choose a topic, download the PDF, and print as many copies as you need.
Whether you are a parent looking to support your child's learning at home, a teacher seeking supplementary classroom resources, or a tutor wanting structured practice materials, our Year 1 worksheets provide a comprehensive and accessible resource. We recommend working through the topics in order, completing one worksheet per day across each week-long subtopic.

Year 1 Curriculum Overview
The Year 1 maths curriculum focuses on building a strong foundation in number and place value, addition and subtraction, measurement, geometry, and fractions. Children are expected to count to and across 100, read and write numbers to 100, and understand the place value of tens and ones. In addition and subtraction, pupils learn to add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero. They also begin to recognise and use the symbols +, -, and =.
Measurement in Year 1 covers comparing, describing, and solving practical problems for lengths and heights, mass and weight, capacity and volume, and time. Children learn to recognise and know the value of different denominations of coins and notes. In geometry, they recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes and describe position, direction, and movement.
The National Curriculum Programme of Study for Year 1 sets out statutory requirements across each domain. In Number and Place Value, children must count to and across 100 from any given number, identify one more and one less, and read and write numbers to 100 in numerals. In Measurement, the statutory requirements include comparing and describing lengths, mass, and capacity, as well as telling the time to the hour and half past. In Geometry, pupils must recognise and name common 2D shapes (including rectangles, squares, circles, and triangles) and 3D shapes (including cuboids, cubes, pyramids, spheres, cylinders, and cones). The non-statutory guidance provides additional direction on teaching approaches, such as using concrete objects and pictorial representations before moving to abstract notation.
Year 1 is the foundation upon which all future mathematical learning is built. The concepts and skills introduced this year — secure counting, understanding of place value, and confident use of addition and subtraction — directly underpin every topic that children will encounter throughout Key Stage 1 and beyond. Our worksheets cover all of these curriculum areas with particular emphasis on daily practice and the development of mathematical fluency alongside problem-solving and reasoning skills.
