Year 1: Addition to 20 (Week 3)

5 daily worksheets — Part of Addition & Subtraction

About Year 1 Addition to 20 Worksheets

Ready to take addition further? These free Year 1 addition to 20 worksheets help your child extend their adding skills beyond 10. If your child has mastered addition within 10, this is the natural next step in building their number confidence.

This week's five worksheets build on earlier addition work by introducing larger numbers up to 20. Your child will use ten frames, number lines, and partitioning strategies to add single-digit numbers to teen numbers. The worksheets gradually increase in challenge, so your child can progress at a comfortable pace while still being stretched.

What's Inside Each Day

1

Day 1

Adding to make teen numbers — your child uses ten frames to see how numbers combine to make totals between 10 and 20.

2

Day 2

Bridging through 10 — children learn the important strategy of making 10 first, then adding the rest, a key mental maths skill.

3

Day 3

Adding two single-digit numbers with totals to 20 — your child practises combinations like 7 + 6 and 8 + 5 using visual supports.

4

Day 4

Addition word problems to 20 — real-world scenarios help your child apply their addition skills to problems involving numbers up to 20.

5

Day 5

Mixed addition challenge — your child tackles a variety of addition problems to 20, consolidating everything learnt this week.

Skills Your Child Will Practise

  • Adding numbers with totals to 20
  • Using the 'bridge through 10' strategy
  • Working with ten frames
  • Solving addition word problems to 20
  • Developing mental addition strategies
  • Building number fluency beyond 10

Top Tip for Parents

Ten frames are incredibly useful at this stage. You can easily make one at home with an egg box (cut to 10 spaces) and small objects like buttons. Let your child physically move objects to 'fill' the ten frame and see what's left over — it makes bridging through 10 click!
