About Year 1 Subtraction to 20 Worksheets
Is your child ready to subtract bigger numbers? These free Year 1 subtraction to 20 worksheets help children aged 5-6 develop their subtraction skills with numbers up to 20. Each worksheet uses visual supports to make subtracting from teen numbers clear and manageable.
Over five daily practice sheets, your child will learn to subtract from numbers up to 20 using counting back, number lines, and the 'subtract through 10' strategy. These worksheets build gradually — starting with subtracting small amounts from teen numbers before moving to more challenging calculations. Every worksheet includes fluency questions for speed, word problems for application, and reasoning challenges for deeper thinking.
What's Inside Each Day
Day 1
Subtracting from teen numbers — your child starts by taking away small numbers from totals between 10 and 20 using pictures and number lines.
Day 2
Counting back from 20 — children practise counting backwards from numbers up to 20, building the mental skill of subtraction.
Day 3
Subtracting through 10 — your child learns to break subtraction into steps, going down to 10 first, then subtracting the rest.
Day 4
Subtraction word problems to 20 — scenarios like "There are 15 children on the bus, 6 get off — how many are still on the bus?" bring subtraction to life.
Day 5
Mixed subtraction to 20 — a varied practice sheet covering all the week's strategies, building speed and accuracy.

Top Tip for Parents
If your child finds subtracting from teen numbers difficult, try working with real objects first. Count out 14 pasta pieces, take some away, and count what's left. Once they can do it physically, the worksheets will make much more sense. There's no rush — building a strong foundation now pays off hugely later.
All our Year 1 Subtraction to 20 worksheets are completely free to download and print. Each worksheet is aligned to the UK national curriculum and includes fluency practice, word problems, and reasoning challenges — everything your child needs for a well-rounded KS1 maths practice session.
