About Year 1 Weight and Mass Worksheets
Can your child tell which object is heavier? These free Year 1 weight and mass worksheets help children understand the concepts of heavy and light through engaging comparison activities. Ideal for building the measurement foundations your child needs in Key Stage 1.
This week's five worksheets focus on weight and mass. Your child will compare objects by holding and hefting, use balance scales to decide which is heavier or lighter, and begin to understand that size doesn't always determine weight. Every worksheet is packed with visual examples and hands-on thinking tasks.
What's Inside Each Day
Day 1
Heavy and light — your child identifies which objects are heavy and which are light using everyday examples.
Day 2
Comparing weights — children decide which of two objects is heavier or lighter, using balance scale pictures.
Day 3
Ordering by weight — your child puts objects in order from lightest to heaviest.
Day 4
Measuring weight with non-standard units — children explore how many cubes or blocks balance against an object.
Day 5
Weight and mass problems — word problems ask your child to apply their understanding of weight in real-life situations.
Skills Your Child Will Practise
- Comparing weights of objects
- Using vocabulary: heavier, lighter, heaviest, lightest
- Reading simple balance scales
- Ordering objects by weight
- Solving practical weight problems
Top Tip for Parents
Let your child hold different objects in each hand and guess which is heavier — a tin of beans versus a bag of crisps, for example. You'll be surprised how much discussion this sparks! If you have kitchen scales, let them weigh favourite toys and compare.
All our Year 1 Weight and Mass worksheets are completely free to download and print. Each worksheet is aligned to the UK national curriculum and includes fluency practice, word problems, and reasoning challenges — everything your child needs for a well-rounded KS1 maths practice session.
